BREAKDOWN

WEDNESDAY

1. I lay my thoughts here, on X, as it is the only social site as devoid of joy as I am.

2. Enid says I need to use more emojis, which is both an insult to my intelligence and a worrisome enabling of our generation’s arrested development. Plug, bathtub, blood droplet.

3. I see it only fitting that people sing Happy Birthday - what better way to torture someone?

4. Normally, I’d revel in the death and destruction of a town cannibalized by its own incompetence, but on this, the anniversary of The Salem Witch Trials, I must pay tribute to Goody Addams, without whom I would be dead…or worse, normal.

5. Since editors are feeble-minded minions with a single brain among them, I will share my newest novel here, for your edification. 1/1800

THING

1. 🫳🏻👋🏻🫵🏻✌🏻🤏🏻👍🏻🤝

2. Like I tell Enid: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. My bedtime routine is a process, but for the layhand, I’d recommend O’Keeffe’s.

3.

4. Loyalty, honesty, and a paraffin dip. (And I’d never say no to a gossip rag.)

5. Don’t start none, won’t be none.

VIDEO: Get Ready With and/or A Day in the Life of Thing - all shot from his POV

VIDEO:  Interview or “confessional” with Christina Ricci about playing Wednesday originally and what it’s like coming back as a different character now

VIDEO: Enid gives a colorful makeup tutorial

STATIC: Mock magazine page with “What’s in Wednesday’s bag” and “Get the look” sections

CAROUSEL: Each character’s yearbook page with individual pull quotes and superlatives/most likelies

  • e.g. Enid - “This kitty is taking no prisoners.” //  Most likely to win a reality dating show

  • e.g. Wednesday -  “I’m not sure whose twisted idea it was to put hundreds of adolescents in underfunded schools run by people whose dreams were crushed years ago… but I admire the sadism.”

  • e.g. Bianca -  “As my dear mother always says, ‘Fire tests gold, suffering tests a woman.’”

BONUS: Either a video series or listicle published somewhere of characters sharing and/or reviewing their favorite shows on Netflix

  • e.g. Wednesday and murder docs

  • e.g. Enid and Wolf King or Great British Baking Show

AR: Turn people or things around you into stone like Ajax

TIKTOK interactive game: Which Wednesday character (or kind of “outcast”) are you

  • Two choices appear above your head, you tilt your head to choose until you get to the end and find out your answer

AR: Use your phone to turn Wednesday billboards into virtual games

  • e.g. Hyde and Seek - a Where’s Waldo with the monster

WEBSITE: Create Wednesday’s blog or release her novel online

WEBSITE: Create the Nevermore school website

  • Can include a campus tour, curriculum page with information about all the toxic plants, etc.

OTHER: Get the characters onto fantasy or fiction podcasts

Episode 4, “Woe What a Night,” is full of activity and lays a lot of groundwork for the rest of the season.

Wednesday sneaks into the morgue to continue her investigation, only to discover the monster has been stealing body parts from each of its victims.  Still suspicious of Xavier, Wednesday sneaks into his secret art studio and finds a room full of sketches of the monster, furthering her hunch that Xavier is the problem; she asks the sheriff to help investigate him (and eventually admits to Xavier’s face she’s onto him).

Meanwhile, the school is in the throes of organizing the annual dance.  Wednesday plans to spend the night with Eugene sneaking into the forest to scope out what she believes is the monster’s lair, but ends up standing him up to go to the dance with crush Tyler (also hurting Xavier’s feelings in the process).  Poor Eugene decides to head into the woods alone and gets attacked by the monster.  The episode ends with Ms. Thornhill hunched over Eugene’s body asking if he’s alive.

Most important scene of this episode: the iconic Wednesday dance.

JUF

SITUATION: A large protest took place on an Illinois campus which featured students displaying signs comparing Jews to Nazis and saying that Zionists control the university administration. As the protest is wrapping up, a student throws a rock in the direction of the Hillel building. The next day, there is an article in the campus newspaper defending the student who threw the rock saying that “all resistance is justified.” The University has not commented on the incident.

  • Draft a social media response and a long form response to be shared with the community that addresses this scenario. Long form response should be in the style of an update email for general Federation stakeholders. No longer than 3-4 paragraphs.

To our community -

We, like you, are distraught over the news coming out of University of Illinois Chicago.  These disruptive protests have plagued our campuses for over a year, and it remains unacceptable that the administration, teachers, and staff not only allow the violence to escalate, but also that they repeatedly ignore the critical teaching opportunities before them.

Please know, we are working tirelessly to put together resources for activists and teachers on campus to help them combat the gross misinformation that is circulating, as well as scheduling meetings with the president and deans of the university to voice our concerns about their silence.  Overwhelmed by the ongoing escalations or not, it is the responsibility of those in charge to protect all students on campus.

We thank you for your continued support as we fight for Jewish students and our community at large.  If you would like to join our Volunteer Panel on February 16, we will be answering questions, addressing concerns, and offering ways you can take action locally.

We understand that many of you are scared and frustrated, but we are in this together.   And together, we will keep our communities safe and strong.

CAROUSEL

SLIDE 1

JUF is horrified by the behavior of UIC students at yesterday’s protests and the lack of response from the university.  The level of misinformation, violence, and anti-Jewish hate has created a wholly unsafe environment for learning.

SLIDE 2

Targeting Jewish organizations for being Jewish is antisemitic, plain and simple.

SLIDE 3

The students who frequent Hillel are in search of community, a home away from home.

Those students and that space have nothing to do with foreign policy.

SLIDE 4

Even more shameful is the lack of response by the university.  It is the responsibility of the administration to create a safe space for growth for the entire UIC community.

Their silence only furthers the divide on campus and exacerbates the fear among Jewish students.

SLIDE 5

But it is never too late to do the right thing.

Speak up.  Speak out.  Stop anti-Jewish hate.
